In two matches last week LaBlanc scored a 12-1 major decision over the 18th ranked wrestler in the nation, Ryan Smith of Cal Poly. The next night, LeBlanc followed up his outstanding effort by pinning Utah Valley’s David Prieto in the first period (2:23).

Pokes fall to Aztecs 52-42
Laramie, WY – Poor shooting and just flat out being out manned the Wyoming Cowboys Tuesday night 52-42. Wyoming (16-4 overall 2-2 MWC) shot 30% from the field while San Diego State shot 51% from the field for the game., the 51% was just to much for The Pokes to overcome.
Redshirt junior forward Leonard “The Summit” Washington led the way for Wyoming with 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, while redshirt junior guard Luke Martinez added 11 points and two steals.
The Cowboys only trailed by three at halftime 25-22 but a 16-4 run to open the second half put the Aztecs up 41-26 and that was to much for the Cowboys to overcome.
“[San Diego State] shot 51 percent from the field and 45 percent from three for the game,” UW head coach Larry Shyatt said. “If they were just a fair team, it would have been hard for us to win the game against an opponent shooting like that, but they’re much more than a fair team.”
Wyoming pulled it to within 10 late but could get no closer.
Wyoming will be back in action Saturday when they head to Boise, ID to take on the Boise State Broncos.

Laramie, WY – Dave Christensen received another 2012 verbal commitment today when defensive end Sam Awrabi gave a verbal to Wyoming.
Awrabi who is from Clovis, CA is 6’3″ and weighs in at 240 pounds. He is a three star recruit according to Rivals.com, Scout.com and 247sports.com.
Below are video highlights from Awrabi’s junior season at Clovis East Highs School.
Washington earns MWC Player of the Week honor
Matthew Blaylock
Colorado Springs, CO – Wyoming Cowboy’s Leonard Washington has earned the Mountain West Co-Player of the week after his performances against Air Force and Colorado State.
“The Summit” as we have nicknamed here at Poke Pride averaged 22.5 points, 11 rebounds and 2.5 steals in the two games both Poke wins this past week. Washington had 13 points against Air Force Wednesday and followed that up Saturday against Colorado State with a 32 point 14 rebound performance.
Washington shared the Player of the Week honor with Anthony Marshall of UNLV.
The Cowboys will be back in action Tuesday night at the Arena Auditorium, they will welcome the nationally ranked San Diego State Aztecs to Laramie.
Larry Shyatt getting The Pokes some love
Matthew Blaylock
Larry Shyatt has done quite a bit for the Wyoming Cowboys basketball program since being named head coach. He has the team sitting at 16-3 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. He also has the team playing as a team something that has not been done in recent memory. Most of all he has fans coming back to the Arena Auditorium and the fans supporting The Pokes is something that needs to be done.
The turnaround that Larry Shyatt has done for this team is starting to be noticed by multiple media outlets. ESPN’s Andy Katz is the latest to take notice saying Laramie, WY is the place to be Tuesday night for basketball.
From Andy Katz on ESPN.com.
Laramie, Wyo. (San Diego State at Wyoming): How good has first-year coach Larry Shyatt been? Last season, Wyoming finished 10-21 and ranked No. 191 in the country in per-possession defense. Thus far this season, the 16-3 Cowboys rank No. 24. Now that’s a turnaround. But can Wyoming turn this sudden and unexpected success into an NCAA tournament bid? If that’s part of the plan, a win over the ranked Aztecs at home must be, too.

It is nice to see Wyoming finally getting some respect back in the program and all of this can pretty much be credited to one man… Larry Shyatt.
Christensen’s 2012 recruits
Matthew Blaylock
As we stated the other day Dave Christensen has done one thing really well since taking over the head coaching job at Wyoming, recruiting. His 2012 class is stacking up to look like another stellar class.
All though a bit undersized three star recruit Justin Bernthaler will give the defensive line some nice speed. Bernthaler stands at 6’3″ tall but only tips the scales at 240 pounds a bit undersized for a defensive lineman. What he lacks in size he seem to make up for in speed.
Running back Evan Williams is a much needed piece of the puzzle since Alvester Alexander has declared for the NFL draft. Williams comes to Wyoming from Iowa Western Community College. Running a 4.4 40, Williams is elusive and does not go down easy on first contact. Williams has already signed his letter of intent to play for The Pokes. His video is from high school so it is a couple of years old.
All though not rated by Rivals running back Shaun Wick out of Ventura, CA looks to have elusive speed and was looked at by many colleges. As you can see from his video if he lives up to the highlights he could be a recruiting steal.
We will post more videos of Wyoming verbals over the next few days be sure to check them out.
